Fundamentals of Finance (VO) and Finance (VU)
In the area of finance, you start with the two compulsory courses Fundamentals of Finance (lecture = VO) and Finance (lecture combined with exercise = VU).
►Fundamentals of Finance (VO) offers a broad overview of the various subject areas of banking and finance, which you can then delve into in greater depth. Different types of financing and the corresponding financing instruments are presented comparatively, and the relationship between finance and management accounting on the one hand and the role of the financial system in an economy on the other are discussed. You will study the functions of traditional financial intermediaries (especially banks), their further development within the framework of decentralized networks (blockchain technology) and, finally, fundamental aspects of derivative financial instruments for financial risk management. You will also learn the first quantitative methods for answering financial questions.

►Finance (VU) will deepen your ability to apply quantitative methods to independently solve problems in connection with investment and financing decisions. Both (financial) mathematical and statistical concepts are used, for example in the determination of investment returns, the valuation of fixed-interest claims or the risk calculation of a portfolio. In addition, you will deepen your basic understanding of the functions and possible applications of different financing instruments acquired in the lecture and discuss aspects of rational decision-making behavior.

Specialization
Building on the compulsory courses, the Institute of Banking and Finance offers a specialization in "Finance".
Specialized Business Administration (SBWL): Financial Markets and Institutions
SBWL covers the topics of corporate finance and banking in equal parts.
The courses Financial Markets and Corporate Financial Management deal with the financing of companies. The decision between alternative forms of financing is dealt with against the background of the risk to be assessed in the market context as well as the role of entrepreneurial risk in financing decisions and in general business operations. You will also discuss topics such as corporate takeovers and corporate conduct rules, which you will explore in greater depth using empirical examples. In addition to this thematic focus, you will also be introduced to current research questions and methods and gain initial experience in conducting academic research in the field of corporate finance.
As part of the Banking Management and Financial Innovation courses, banking transactions and the role of banks as central intermediaries in the financial system are examined in depth. This course focuses in particular on the two central risks of the banking business, credit risk and interest rate risk. You will first get to know these two risks from a practical perspective and discuss their theoretical foundation before looking at the (statistical) approach to quantifying these risks. In addition to traditional financial intermediation, special attention has recently been paid to decentralized (P2P) networks in the financial system. In this specialization, you will therefore also deal with blockchain technology and the cryptocurrencies based on it.

Basics
The Master's course in Finance (MKF) is offered jointly by the Institutes of Banking and Finance and Financial Economics and is the prerequisite for all SBWL courses in the field of finance. In order to illustrate the breadth of the range of topics in Banking and Finance, the Institute of Banking and Finance addresses the following blocks of topics in this course:

C. Risk Taking in Banking

A third special business administration course (Corporate Finance) is offered jointly with the Institute of Finance.
Specialization INVESTMENTS
This SBWL deepens financial market and investment analysis by applying theoretical models as well as empirical and experimental research methods. The focus is on the areas of asset pricing, asset management and risk management on the one hand, and on the empirical modeling of market data and the understanding of institutions, regulations and the behavior of actors in financial markets on the other.
After completing this specialization, you will be able to
(i) apply and implement different methods and models for the valuation and risk analysis of investment products,
(ii) understand the decision-making behavior of market players and the related influences of payout and incentive patterns,
(iii) apply the acquired methodological and problem-solving skills to directly practice-relevant issues or develop independent solutions, and
(iv) work independently in an academic context.
The module is completed with an oral examination.

Please note: The SBWL Investments (Mestel/Palan) can only be taken as a whole at the Institute. It is not possible to combine this course with courses of the same name at the Institute of Finance!
Specialization CORPORATE FINANCE
This SBWL includes topics relating to corporate investment and financial management. In addition to treasury & cash management and financial risk management, questions relating to investment decisions, the optimal capital structure (equity versus debt capital; hybrid forms of financing), dividend policy and the determination of company value are discussed with special consideration of information frictions.
After completing this specialization, you will be able to
(i) understand different approaches to decision-making in corporate investment and financing policy,
(ii) assess and implement the structuring of financing decisions and the design of financing contracts on the basis of corporate strategy,
(iii) apply the acquired methodological and problem-solving skills to directly practice-relevant issues and develop independent approaches to solutions, and
(iv) work independently in an academic context.
The module is completed with an oral examination.

Subject delimitation for the specialization CORPORATE FINANCE
Specialization FINANCIAL INTERMEDIATION
This SBWL focuses on the core business of banks as well as venture capital companies and FinTechs. Fundamental issues relating to profitability, risk and capital against the background of legal and regulatory requirements are discussed. You will become familiar with theoretical models and quantitative empirical methods as tools for decision-making in the context of managing these companies.
After completing this specialization, you will be able to
(i) determine how legal and regulatory frameworks affect financial institutions and formulate appropriate strategic measures,
(ii) answer relevant practical questions using your acquired methodological skills,
(iii) interpret and implement empirical and practical approaches to modelling risk and profitability, and
(iv) work independently in an academic context.
The module is completed with an oral examination.
